Google Home Max

The Google Home speakers light up to show when they’re listening, but sometimes they might be triggered on accidentally by something that sounds similar to the hotword. In addition to basic colors, popular smartphone skin producer Slickwraps offers vinyl skins for Google Home in various color selections with carbon, metal, wood, leather, glitz, stone and hemp patterns. While you can't configure the colors of the Google Home at the time of purchase, Google did make the fabric base that comes with the speaker removable.

Thanks to the addition of a front-facing camera, the Nest Hub Max essentially functions as a Nest Cam, providing peace of mind when you’re away from home. Tapping into the live feed using the Google Home app for Android, we’re given the option for two-way communication. For those worried about privacy, there’s a green LED that glows next to the camera to indicate it’s being accessed remotely, as well as a pop-up notification that appears on-screen. Now, if you’re paranoid that someone is watching you while at home, there’s even switch on the back that effectively turns off the microphone and camera. Yes, the Google Home Max was meant to satisfy those cravings, but the Google Nest Hub Max can certainly fill the void, too. The device is armed with dual 10-watt tweeters and a 30-watt woofer, allowing for substantially more power and making the Nest Hub Max perfect for all sorts of music listening.

Prolonged exposure to sunlight may cause partial discoloration. Some Google Home components and the base installed on your Google Home emit an electromagnetic field that can interfere with the functioning of pacemakers and other medical devices. The Google Home Max, on the other hand, is designed so that its sound will easily fill a whole room. It has dual 4.5-inch woofers built in, and it's not difficult to tell that Google spent extra time making sure the bass sounded good.

In keeping with the minimalist aesthetic of products such as the Google Home Mini and Daydream View, the Google Home Max demonstrates that twill is the new piano black. The whole front of the speaker is covered in a gray cloth while the back is a smooth, matte plastic. The Google Home Max builds the convenience of Google Assistant into a plus-size speaker that can fill a room with excellent sound. To turn off banner notifications, open Photo frame settings for your display, then set “Banner notifications” to Hide. You can add or remove albums with the Home app or your Nest display. Live Albums automatically add photos from your Google Photos library so you don’t have to manually update the photos on your Nest display.

If you mainly want background music, you should spend half as much on the Sonos One. Ty Pendlebury is a journalism graduate of RMIT Melbourne, and has worked at CNET since 2006. He lives in New York City where he writes about streaming and home audio. To hide photos with a specific person’s face, remove their face group in Google Photos.

Instructions for applying skins on the Google Home will vary, but take your time and make sure to properly align the wrap before pressing it firmly into place. If none of these suits your style, there are plenty of other options online, which will run you anywhere from $10 to $30. Some even come with skins for the power adapter, which is a cool touch if it can't be hidden behind furniture. For the Google Home Mini, there are a couple case or cover options on Etsy that will disguise the speaker as the sorting hat from Harry Potter, a Death Star or R2-D2 .

Voice interaction with photos is available in most Google Assistant languages that work on your Nest display. To share the photo with one of your Google contacts, say “Hey Google, share this photo with ” and follow the prompts. If you have Voice Match enabled, you can also say “Hey Google, change Photo frame” to open Photo frame settings on your Nest display. If you like the idea of a smart speaker but also want Bluetooth so that you can bring the speaker with you when you go outside then you should check out the Sonos Move.

I did have some issues with the speaker hearing me when I spoke to it while music was playing, but I’ll get into that later. If you have a Google Chromecast, getting anything to play on your TV is seamless. Even pausing and playing the content is pretty quick and reliable just by telling the speaker to pause or resume playback. That said, browsing is basically impossible because you’re interfacing with your TV through voice. You have to know what you want to watch, and then tell the Google Home Max to cast it. When it comes to setting up a home audio system, it usually requires some confusion and a bunch of cables.

On the top is a touch-sensitive section for playback and volume. At higher volumes, the speaker had trouble picking up the hotword. The Google Home Max has an acoustically transparent fabric that won’t get in the way of your music. The small lights behind the fabric light up when you speak or adjust playback.

Throw in a Google Home Mini for voice control and you're golden. The biggest issue with the Max's sound was its potentially piercing midrange. Unfortunately I couldn't adjust it out; turning treble down all the way didn't help much. If you like Dick Dale or bluegrass violin solos, maybe you should consider a different speaker. I had mixed results with adjusting volume, although play/pause seemed to work fine. The sound can be a little too revealing, and guitar lines in particular can sound a little too piercing for comfort.

No more waving your cell phone randomly around the room for five minutes as with Sonos Trueplay. To expand beyond that, create a new Live Album and enable it in the Photo frame settings. Google launched the Nest Audio last fall, serving as a replacement to both the original Google Home and the oversized Home Max. It's one of the best speakers you can buy for under $100, but it's not perfect.

As far as design is concerned, the Google Home Max looks great wherever you decide to put it. Taking a step back from the details in build materials, one of my favorite things about the speaker is its simple and minimal design. Besides the switch on the back , the Google Home Max is just one block of plastic. There aren’t any knobs or buttons to take away from the smooth design which makes sense since most of the functionality can be controlled with your voice. There is just one touch sensitive area on the side of the speaker that’s responsible for volume control or pausing/playing music, but that’s it.
